Utah State Football Player Suffers Sudden Cardiac Arrest on Field, in ‘Fair’ Condition

Utah State football player Josh Davis is currently in the hospital recovering after what has been reported as a “non-traumatic sudden cardiac arrest” during a spring practice session on Thursday.

Fox News reported that Davis, a redshirt freshman from California, collapsed on the football field and was immediately taken to Logan Regional Hospital before being relocated to McKay-Dee Hospital.

Davis was initially reported to be in critical condition, which upgraded to fair condition the following morning.

Utah State released a press statement, saying: “Davis received initial critical treatment and was stabilized at Logan Regional Hospital before being transported to McKay-Dee Hospital, where their critical care team continued treatment with therapeutic hypothermia to lower the body temperature to preserve his neurological function.”

Utah State head coach Blake Anderseon reportedly visited the hospital and posted it to Twitter.

“The smiles say it all… it was a brutal night, but Josh never stopped fighting,” Anderson wrote.

“Through God’s grace, and an amazing group of Trainers & Medical Professionals we are doing better every minute today. So grateful for all the prayers & support lifted up over the past 24 hrs.”

Davis is not the first football player to suddenly collapse on the football field due to cardiac arrest. Earlier this year, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed after tackling a Cincinnati Bengals player.

Hamlin reportedly passed out and received medical attention for the next several days. Though people have expressed their opinions on these instances of cardiac arrest in young, healthy people, there does not appear to be any confirmation that these instances share anything in common.

The Defender reported in April 2022 that there have been a total of 769 athletes who have collapsed during competition, from March 2021 to March 2022. The outlet has suggested that this massive increase in number coincides with the prevalance of COVID-19 vaccinations, which have been heavily criticized since the nationwide rollout began.

However, there is no conclusive evidence that this is the case.
